The Nissan Rogue is part of the compact crossover segment, which is the best-selling automotive category in the U.S. and, therefore, the most competitive. Compact crossovers have essentially replaced sedans as the default family vehicle. Almost all mainstream and luxury brands feature a compact crossover in their model lineups. The popularity of this segment is clear, as these vehicles combine a compact and efficient size that is easy to maneuver in city traffic and parking lots with ample space to comfortably seat five people while still providing a decent amount of cargo room. Most model lines offer all-wheel drive for improved on-road traction, whether as an option or a standard feature. The segment predominantly features 4-cylinder engines, both turbocharged and naturally aspirated, and a few, like the Rogue, feature surprisingly powerful turbocharged 3-cylinder engines.
The Nissan Rogue was introduced in the 2008 model year. It is currently in its third design generation and is the best-selling Nissan model. The Rogue features a unique turbocharged 1.5-liter inline-3 engine, which incorporates the Nissan brand’s exclusive variable compression technology. This system removes the need to reduce compression when turbocharging is used, effectively creating its own high compression. As a result, the engine can maintain the efficiency and power of high compression when the turbo boost is low and adjust it downward as the boost increases. This creates a win-win situation that enables the Rogue to outperform many of its competitors while preserving high fuel efficiency.
Of course, the Rogue is more than just a trick engine. The cabin is spacious and comfortable, and the safety and tech are impressive. Here is how the Rogue competes against its closest competitors.
Toyota introduced the car-based RAV4 in 1994, which created the compact crossover category. Today, the RAV4 is well into its fifth design generation and is built on a version of the Camry platform. It is the best-selling model in the category and the best-selling Toyota model. The RAV4 is available with conventional hybrid and plug-in hybrid drivetrains, though this comparison only involves the non-electrified RAV4 models powered by a 2.5-liter inline-4 engine.
After being sold in Japan for two years, the Honda CR-V entered the U.S. market in February 1997. Now in its sixth design generation, it is positioned between the HR-V and the Passport in size. The CR-V has surpassed the Accord as the best-selling Honda model and is offered with both conventional and hybrid drivetrains. The conventional drivetrain includes a turbocharged 1.5-liter inline-4 combined with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Both the Rogue and CR-V utilize continuously variable transmissions. There is a Hybrid CR-V, but this comparison is made against the non-hybrid model.

The Sportage is one of the original compact SUVs that came out slightly before the Toyota RAV4. However, the first Sportage models were not really crossovers as they were more truck-like with body-on-frame construction and either rear or four-wheel drive. After a two-year hiatus, and after the Hyundai purchase of Kia, the Sportage returned for model-year 2005, sharing a Hyundai car-based platform with the first-generation Hyundai Tucson. While the two models do not look anything alike inside or out, they share the same drivetrain, chassis components, and other hardware underneath. Consequently, like the Tucson, the Sportage is available with conventional, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid drivetrains. This comparison is against the conventional gas-powered Sportage, which, like the Tucson, is powered by a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter inline-4 engine.
The Equinox is Chevrolet’s entry in this popular segment. Chevrolet introduced the Equinox as a 2005 model and recently debuted the fourth-generation model for the 2025 model year. Chevrolet also sells an Equinox EV, but it shares little with the gas-powered model outside its name and general size. The gas-powered Equinox uses a 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine, with FWD models using a continuously variable transmission while AWD models use an 8-speed automatic. The Equinox is available in LT, ACTIV, and RST trim levels. All come standard with FWD and are available with AWD.
